Every Child Deserves a Strong Start
The first years of a child's education shape everything that follows. At United Way of Northeast Missouri, we're working to ensure every child enters school ready to learn and reads on grade level by the end of third grade—the milestone that helps unlock lifelong success.
Through direct programs, community partnerships, and countywide collaboration, we're building a stronger literacy ecosystem for children across Northeast Missouri.
Why Early Literacy Matters
Learning to read by the end of third grade is one of the strongest predictors of future academic success. Before third grade, children are learning to read. After third grade, they begin reading to learn.
When children fall behind early, it becomes increasingly difficult to catch up. That's why United Way of Northeast Missouri focuses our Youth Opportunity work on giving children the support they need during these critical years.
We believe that when families, schools, businesses, nonprofits, and volunteers work together, every child has a greater opportunity to thrive.
